The Decision Maker Panel (DMP) is a monthly online survey of businesses run by the Bank of England. It collects information on business expectations, uncertainty and topical policy issues, with around 2,500 responses each month. The DMP sample frame includes firms with more than 10 employees.
The Business Insights and Conditions Survey (BICS) is a voluntary fortnightly Office for National Statistics survey covering businesses of all sizes. Each wave covers a two-week period and captures business views on topics such as turnover, workforce, prices, trade and resilience. Around 10,000 firms respond to each wave.
This matched dataset brings together DMP and BICS responses. Both surveys provide timely, high-frequency information on business conditions and the impact of economic events, including the UK’s decision to leave the European Union and the COVID-19 pandemic. While the surveys cover similar themes, their questions, routing and response formats may differ across waves.
DMP questions are generally more quantitative and the survey is relatively short. BICS is typically longer and often captures information in a more qualitative format. Linking the two sources enables researchers to combine complementary evidence to better understand business conditions, decision-making and responses to economic uncertainty. Users should consider changes in questions and routing when comparing data across waves.
