Description:
This enhanced dataset expands the current TIG/IDBR dataset to 8-digit commodity code for each reporting unit and additional variables including statistical value, net mass, supplementary unit, currency invoiced and month the trade occurred.
This dataset continues to provide company-level HMRC Overseas Trade in Goods Statistics (OTS) matched to Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR) reporting units, giving reporting-unit level exports and imports of goods, to enable analysis with other reporting-unit and business-level datasets. The hierarchy for businesses on the IDBR is: - Enterprise group (common ownership level) – Enterprise (CRN, PAYE and VAT level – however, multiple 9-digit VAT references may still match to the same IDBR enterprise reference) – Reporting Unit (ONS-specific subdivisions of enterprises for the purposes of business surveys.
Only some the largest businesses are split into reporting units, for the vast majority this is the same as the enterprise level. Most business datasets in the SRS are at the reporting unit level) – Local Unit (business site) Trade data is given by partner country and 8-digit commodity code for each reporting unit. The trade data reported to HMRC at the 9-digit VAT reference level is matched to the IDBR by ONS.
Apportionment is carried out to reporting units where there are multiple candidate reporting units within an enterprise group, as occasionally IDBR VAT matching is to an enterprise with no employment, while other enterprises within the group have positive employment, and this is presumed to better match the economic activity. This dataset has more stringent requirements for statistical disclosure control than typical ONS datasets in the SRS. Researchers must familiarise themselves with these requirements and ensure that the stricter controls are evidenced in any research output requests.
